Lag B'Omer commemorates the end of an epidemic which took the lives of thousands of students of Rabbi Akiva (c. 20–c. 137 CE). It is also the date of passing of Rabbi Shimom Bar Yochai, author of the Zohar. Lag B’Omer is Hebrew for the 33rd day of counting the Omer, the seven-week lead up to Shavout. It is treasured by Jewish children throughout the world as a day of outings and parades that celebrate Jewish unity and pride. For more information on Lag B'Omer click here
