Drama Teacher Helps Torah Come Alive at Natick Chabad Hebrew School

 Melody_3.JPG

Melody Michaelson has joined the staff of the Chabad Center in Natick as drama teacher for the Center’s Hebrew School.  “We find that when children act out a part, sing and dance, they are often more likely to retain, in a deep and meaningful way, the content and meaning of the Torah stories which they study,” says Chanie Fogelman, Hebrew School Director. “Melody’s skills and creativity will help us to further our goal of honoring the talent and self expression of each of our students.”   Mrs. Fogelman has developed a curriculum which integrates the arts into the study of Torah. The Chabad Hebrew School is held on Sundays.  Ms. Michaelson is an accomplished actress, pianist, singer, and dancer.  She has performed in a number of regional professional theatrical productions.  Before coming to Chabad, Ms. Michaelson ran after-school programs at the Maimoinides School in Brookline for students in kindergarten through grade six in music, theatre, movement and drama. The popularity her programs at was evidenced by continued reenrollment of her many students and the well-attended end-of-semester performances held for families.

“Learning at our Hebrew School takes place in an environment where students are enthusiastic about discovering the depth and meaning of Jewish life,” adds Mrs. Fogelman. “We also strive to keep up with the most creative and innovative practices in Jewish education.”  The school serves children ages five and up, with a specialty in Hebrew reading fluency, and uses theAleph Champ system, based on the martial arts motivational philosophy of color-coded levels and testing, inspiring students into a positive cycle of learning and fluency. Additional subjects include Hebrew language, vocabulary and grammar; Jewish history; the Jewish calendar; Israel; Torah stories; and mitzvot “Come and join in Chabad's ‘Broadway Kids’ on our adventures as we sing, dance, and act our way through our journeys in the Torah,” says Mrs. Fogelman.  “Every child will have a starring role in our performances!”

Synagogue membership is not required for families to attend the Chabad Hebrew School, and   families who belong to other congregations, as well as non-affiliated families, are welcome. Payment plans are available. No child will be turned away for lack of funds. For more information or to register for the 2008 – 2009 school year call 508-650-1499.
